Cheap Lamp Shades
If you see cheap lamp shades for sale, chances are that those lamp shades are perfectly practical but not very pretty. The most beautiful beaded lamp shades and those made from wonderful fabrics such as silk and pure linen are generally not the lowest price lampshades you can find. The cheap shades are probably in quite plain colors and shapes but in many ways that doesn’t matter if that is what your lamp base needs. If you have a very beautiful table lamp sometimes the best way to set that off is with a very simple square or drum lamp shade in cream or white. That way the base gets all the attention it deserves.
Very simple plain lamp shades are most in keeping with contemporary interiors however. In a traditional environment, it is better if your lamp shade has a touch of elegance and, in that case, fabrics and decoration matter.
If you need a fancier lamp shade but you have a limited budget then you have a few options.
Discount Lamp Shades
One way is to look for discount lamp shades which were quite expensive at full price but which have been reduced. You will find these in designer outlet centers and in the lighting department of department stores at sale times as well as in exclusive specialized lighting stores.
Decorate a Plain Lamp Shade
Another way is to buy a cheap lamp shade in a plain color and fabric and give it the designer touch by decorating it. You probably can’t imagine how many trimmings there are which would work to give your lampshade a unique design, but there are endless variations. You can get some great ideas by looking in the haberdashery department of a big store where they sell trimmings by the meter or yard. You will find all kinds of edgings which you can attach to your plain shade with a glue gun. There are things like fringing made with beads which are fantastic as they catch the light and many different embroidered braids as well as feather edgings for an exotic look.
Cover Your Lamp Shade
Yet another option is to cover your lampshade with exotic paper. You will find some beautiful hand made papers in craft shops. You can do this most easily with a drum lamp shade or a conical one with straight sides. Other shapes are a bit trickier to deal with. Roll you lamp shade over the paper and mark the edges to form a template, then cut out leaving a small margin for overlap. Wrap the paper around the lamp so it is a smooth fit and then use a good glue on the overlap to keep the cover in place. You make can make this even easier if you use a self adhesive lamp shade as then all you have to do is cut out fabric or paper following the included pattern and then apply it to the lampshade.

Pink Lampshade Goes Crazy!
There are lots of beautiful lamp shades around, but sometimes there is a product which just catches your eye and the LumiSource Wiggle table lamp with pink shade was one that I noticed yesterday. It just seems like a fantastic fun lamp for a girl’s room or home office. You give the wiggle lamp base a tap and it is on a spring so it sways from side to side before coming to rest then you can’t resist pushing it again. The chrome base is smart as well as fun but I particularly like the pink lampshade covered in feathers.
When I looked at the details, it is quite a small lamp (twelve inches high) so don’t be expecting a huge thing and you won’t be disappointed by this is lovely little lamp. It would be just right for a bedside light as it takes a 25 watt candle bulb and is designed for 120 volt power supply.
The feather lamp shade actually comes in a number of different colors including black and white, white and rainbow color ways as well as pink. The rainbow one is truly crazy and makes the pink one seem very sensible LOL The pink one is offered in a couple of places on Amazon. The cheapest one is HERE whereas the other colors you can better get from this page for the best price.
These lamps with their chrome bases will go well with silver colored or mirrored furniture but they would truly cheer up any room in need of a lift and will make you smile whenever you see one.
If you choose one of the pink lamp shades, you could decorate your room with a matching feather boa draped over the bed head or over the top of the curtains like a scarf valance for a real fun look and add a matching bubblegum pink rug. You can then get away with having everything else plain and simple.
If you choose the white one you could create a very romantic bedroom with white fairy lights, and white or silver colored furniture and accessories and a white sheepskin or shag rug.
And if you choose the rainbow one below you could go crazy with color or keep your room lovely and simple so that your lamp stands out!

Stylish Square Lamp Shades
Square lamp shades are those which have straight sides and a square gap at both the top and the bottom of the lamp shade.
Types of Square Lamp Shade
In one type of square lamp shade the square opening at the top is smaller than the square at the bottom so that the sides of the lamp shade slope towards the top, like a square-based pyramid with the top cut off. In another type the two gaps are identical and the lamp shade is more like a box, which may be completely square in three dimensions like a cube or more elongated in one dimension – a rectangular cuboid shape.
Traditional Lamp Shades
You will often find the first type of square lamp shade for sale separately, in many different colors, so that you can add a square lamp shade to a lamp base you already own. This cut off pyramid shape is more traditional in nature and would look good with a classic lamp base in a traditional room setting. These lamp shades are generally made with frames covered in silk, stiffened cotton or rayon.
Contemporary Lamp Shades
The cube or cuboid type square lamp shades are usually sold together with a matching lamp base. This means that you cannot go wrong with your choice of square lamp shades for table lamps you own but it does mean that you are buying a whole lamp and not just a shade. These lamps are generally contemporary in nature and give a modern look to your room. The shades are usually made of glass or cotton but you will also find a few lamps with square paper lamp shades. Be careful when fitting these as it is easy to put your fingers right through them.
Here are a few examples of both types of square lamp shades to whet your appetite about the kinds of shades and lamps you can buy. If there is nothing here to your liking you will find many more HERE, many at a discount and with free shipping.
